Limerick is a rising star in Ireland's south-west. Sitting on the banks of the River Shannon, it's often overlooked by people turning to Dublin, Belfast or Cork. But with a millennia-long history, a buzzing cultural landscape and a growing foodie scene, it's worth planning a trip to visit this hidden gem of Ireland's south-west.

Start with Limerick's most iconic landmark – King John's Castle. Recently refurbished, this 13th century castle is a Norman treasure trove of history. Having survived sieges and rebellions over the course of its lifetime, it now exists as a reminder of Limerick's incredible past, and is a staple fixture of the Limerick skyline.

In the present day, Ireland has become a stronghold of incredible rugby, and Limerick remains at the heart of the action. The city is home to Thomond Park, a legendary venue that houses the Munster rugby team, and has produced world-renowned players like Ronan O'Gara and Peter Stringer.

For film and literature fans, Limerick is home to the Frank McCourt Museum, that celebrates the life and times of the Angela's Ashes author. If you're looking for somewhere to eat, Limerick's Milk Market is open Friday-Sunday every weekend. It overflows with incredible local produce – explore, get chatting to the stallholders and discover something new!

For a spot of culture, the Limerick Museum collection aims to illustrate and celebrate the lives of Limerick natives over the course of the city's history. Archaeological artefacts, local art and examples of homegrown specialities like silver and lace are all on display here.

Top it all off with a visit to Limerick's premier bistro, Canteen. The restaurant has an ethos of creating simple, tasty dishes, that are crafted with love, flair and style. Our recommendation? The tzatziki poached salmon or the organic meatballs – a delicious way to top off your time here!
