Ireland has a reputation for being green, but when it comes to St Valentine's Day, the island is tickled pink with romance. Here are some of the best places to bring your partner on a loved-up visit to Ireland.
Cycle the breathtaking Hook peninsula in County Wexford. Stop off at Loftus Hall to rent a bike – don’t let the haunting tales deter you – then ride out towards the end of the peninsula, where the magnificent striped Hook lighthouse stands surrounded by miles of stunning coastline. Don't forget to bring a picnic!
Sticking with the coastline, head to the pretty seaside town of Kinsale in Cork. This harbour haven is a hotspot for romantic possibilities, with colourful houses, long stretches of immaculate beach and a worldwide reputation for fine-dining. Explore the gorgeous town, then strike out for the sea on a opulent harbour tour with Atlantic Charters.
Prefer to get away from it all? A trip away to Lusty Beg, an island sanctuary in the Fermanagh lakelands, is a great option. In the middle of Lough Erne, you can relax together at the spa retreat, enjoy some gorgeous food and take a nature walk through the island’s beautiful surroundings. And at the end of the day, retiring to your cabin amidst the rugged beauty of the lakes is the height of luxury.
Finally, make a trip to Portstewart Strand on the County Derry coast. This stunning beach is overlooked by Mussenden Temple, a beautiful little monument modelled on the Temple of Vesta in Rome. Take a bracing walk, hike up to the temple for a blessing from the goddess of hearth and home, then wind down towards Harry’s Shack, an award-winning fish restaurant looking out over the beach for a romantic dinner. Perfection!
