Even though there’s plenty to see and do around Ireland, sometimes it’s nice to look up and enjoy the view above you. The island of Ireland features some prime locations for a bit of stargazing, and if you’re lucky, you might just catch a very special show…

Start down in Wexford at the Hook Peninsula. This beautiful stretch of coastline sticks out in to the irish Sea, showcasing white sand beaches and the magnificently striped Hook Lighthouse by day. But by night, because it’s so remote, it’s a prime spot to gaze out into space, and watch the universe unfold.

Heading north, make your way into the Mourne Mountains. As one of the most remote places in Ireland, there’s no light pollution here – just a clear and unobstructed view in to the twinkling galaxy! Set up your telescope, and gaze in to the endless expanse of the night sky.

If you head towards the west of Ireland, you’ll find the jewel in the crown of stargazing in Ireland – the Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve. This gorgeous part of the country on the Iveragh Peninsula provides a stunning snapshot of unspoiled space, allowing you to imagine what it would be like to glide amongst the stars themselves. And it's close to UNESCO World Heritage Site the Skelligs too, a filming location for Star Wars Episode VII and VIII – it's an out of this world experience!

And finally, even though it’s not technically stargazing, you have to get to the Inishowen Peninsuia in County Donegal. If you do, you might just be lucky enough to catch one of the most spectacular shows on earth. The night sky becomes a moving painting, as the Northern Lights dance above you. It’s total magic!
