Question from Colin Miller: I am looking for Edward McGuckin , b about 1835 ,from Leitrim and Mary Finnegan , b about 1837from Monaghan. Apparantly they were married in Monaghan in 1851. I can't find any trace of their births or marriage. They then move to Scotland and appear firstly in Dunfermline then Edinburgh. On e of their sons Edward , born Edinburgh 1860 moves to Edinburgh in about 1889 with Elizabeth Garrigan. It would be good to find out where their origins are in Ireland but the McGuckin name causes problems. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!
Answer from Findmypast: If you have no idea of location, a good idea is to search for clusters of the same family name to see if you can narrow it down to one or two potential areas. Edward McLysaght's 'Surnames of Ireland' book is a great source for finding out the origins of specific Irish surnames.
