How does a person go about tracing their roots back to where family came from in Ireland? 'Alexander Mayne' seemed like a popular name back in the 1800's. (Question posted by one our Facebook Friends)

Start by gathering as many family documents as you can, starting with your own birth certificate and working your way back through the generations; both of your parents, your four grandparents, eight great-grandparents etc. until you come across documentation (such as an immigration or death certificate) for your first ancestor who was not born in the same country as you, but rather, emigrated from Ireland. Once you know when and where in Ireland that first ancestor was born, then you can start looking for their documents back in Ireland (a process we're happy to help you get started with, if you send us a message with the details of your Irish ancestors place and date of birth). To get the documents you need back home, it's best for you to contact your local registry office or archives, they should have copies. I really hope this helps. Good Luck!
