Hello Mark,
The month of May is a great time to visit Northern Ireland as the weather is usually mild and it is bright until after 9pm.
Many of the
Game of Thrones film locations are to be found on the Causeway Coast and Glens Coastal Route. The route is clearly signposted heading north out of Belfast. When you reach the town of Carrickfergus look out for the Norman Castle. It does not feature in the HBO series but is impressive and interesting nonetheless! From Carrickfergus the road meanders along the rocky coastline until you reach "North of Winterfell" at the Glens of Antrim. Driving on towards Ballycastle you can stop off at the Cushendun Caves (The Stormlands) and Murlough Bay (Storms End). A bit further on at Larrybane you can explore "Pyke, The Iron Islands" and both "Dragonstone" and "The Kings Road" are nearby. Loads of photo opportunities! If you enjoy walking there are plenty of places to get out and explore to really experience the atmosphere of the place. Other attractions nearby are Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge, the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle.
There are a couple of other things you might like to check out. There is a
Game of Thrones tapestry on display at the Ulster Museum in Belfast. It is 77 metres in length and is in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting scenes from the series. You can also look out for the ten exquisitely crafted wooden doors (carved from a fallen tree at the Dark Hedges, alias The Kings Road). They show scenes from the series and can be found in pubs and restaurants near to the film locations.
As the area is a popular tourist destination there is a great selection of bed & breakfast properties and hotels to choose from. There are also a few hostels where you can get an ensuite family room. To see the Tourism Northern Ireland approved properties in the Causeway Coast and Glens region please visit our web site:
www.visitcausewaycoastandglens.com If you require any assistance you can contact the Coleraine Visitor Information Centre and we will be happy to help. Just to let you know that from 16th to 19th May the area will be very busy as the North West 200 motorbike races are being held in the area round Portrush, so it will be more difficult to get accommodation near there during this very popular event.
I hope you enjoy your trip!
Regards,
Anne
