Dear all,
we would like to hike with our 3 Irish Wolfhounds on Achill Island. There is a hiking route/a loop from Doogort to Slievemore. Is here the possibility to hike with dogs, or is this area private property?
And then there is a hiking route/ a loop  at the Mwleerea start from the N335 at the Killary Fiord. Is here the possibility to hike with dogs, or is this area private property?
I'm very glad to get advice.
Have a nice day :) Klaudia

Hi Klaudia,

That sounds like such a fun and adventurous trip you are putting together! When are you planning to visit?

The Sports Ireland website lists plenty of hikes and you can also find information on whether or not dogs are allowed on certain hikes. I believe this might be the first route you mention in your question? It seems like dogs are allowed (on a lead) on the Achill Island - Dooagh Loop. Beyond that, the Mayo Council Website also has some great information on hikes and walks and in the top left of the page you can find a link to Achill Island Loop Walks. While doing a quick search I couldn't find the second trail you mention, but maybe you have more luck? Please do let us know if you get stuck here...

If you need more help with the general planning of your trip, this page has a lot of helpful information on how to bring your pet to Ireland.

I hope you find these links helpful for putting together this great adventure. Please share any interesting facts you find on your research, and feel free to let us know if you have any more questions!

Happy planning!
Sarah

Liebe Sarah,

Mal unterwegs.
Liebe Grüße Klaudia

For the loop from Doogort to Slievemore, dogs are generally allowed on trails in Ireland, but it’s always a good idea to check with local authorities or landowners to confirm access and any specific restrictions.Similarly, for the Mweelrea loop starting from N335 at Killary Fjord, dogs are typically welcome on trails. Enjoy your hikes!

Thanks so much for chiming in with your personal experience, Avery - it is much appreciated! 💚

Liebe Klaudia,

Liebe Grüße
Rebecca
