Hi, I'm getting started on researching my family's Irish history.  I think my GG grandfather (Edward Gavney) was born in County Meath in 1820.  I've read something about census info being lost(?) at that time?  We are planning a visit to Ireland next year, and would love to see where our ancestors lived, and maybe even see what relatives ended up doing (for those who stayed in Ireland).  Thanks in advance for any ideas.  Also:  Happy Halloween, you originators of Halloween!

Hi Dale!

First off, happy Halloween to you as well!  🎃 It’s fantastic that you’re diving into your Irish roots, especially in County Meath—there’s so much history here.

To start with the records, you’re right about the challenges with Irish census data; much of it from the 19th century was unfortunately lost. However, parish records can be an excellent source, and Roots Ireland’s County Meath parish records are a great first stop for someone like Edward Gavney, born around 1820. In fact, when I searched his name and d.o.b, two birth records came up with a match for that name/year and 11 census matches, which you can explore.

Since you’re planning a visit to Ireland, I’d definitely recommend exploring County Meath, especially given its incredible history. Besides the genealogical research, you’ll find significant historical sites nearby, like the Hill of Tara, where ancient Irish kings were crowned, and Trim Castle, a beautifully preserved Norman castle. You might get a sense of the landscape your ancestors would have known.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I would be glad to help.

Cathaoir
