A few years ago, I moved to the beautiful village of Cobh two weeks after retiring. Everyone was so nice and I made many friends. Frieda and Malcolm, at the tourist center asked me if I would help them translate the visitor pamphlet from English into German. Everything went fine except for one sentence, which l I translated something to the effect "the victims of the Lusitania were brought to shore by the Cobh townspeople and welcomed into their homes".

Luckily I was forgiven and accepted as a volunteer to be one of the many Cobh Ambassadors who meet and greet the many cruise ships arriving in Cobh each summer. I was very surprised  to be accepted. But  I was told (with a wink and a smile) by a few of the ladies that because most Americans speak very fast, they sometimes have problems understanding. And some of the American visitors have trouble understanding them. But because of my way of speaking slower, they thought I could serve as translator between the two. We all had a great laugh at that. It was all great fun and I spent a couple of years having more fun volunteering.

Even though I had to move back to the States a couple of years ago, I always remember those timers. So this year, I'm headed back for a month in the Spring and another month in the Autumn. I just cannot stay away from Ireland......she keeps calling me home.

Hello Viktoria!

I'm so glad that you joined our Community and you shared with us your funny experience as a volunteer in Cobh. :D

Now that Ireland has become your second home, it's always a great feeling to come back and meet again the local people. Will you be staying in Cobh again? Or have you planned to explore new places around the island?

If you need any inspirations for your next trip have a look at this forum and, if you fancy, you can always start a new thread!

Have a great day,

Francesco

Ciao amici, anzi: "Slainte".
Ho visitato tutti i luoghi e i siti possibili immaginabili.

A presto,

Francesco

Questo invece è il mio campione. Discende direttamente dagli antichi guerrieri "Feniani". "Erin go brath"https://d2b4i25io5fq3v.cloudfront.net/04-02-2019/a0c37fba-9b98-4542-9b6c-4544.jpg

We love Donegal. I am an artist and I’ve painted quite a few people along the Wild Atlantic Way. This watercolour is of a cottage at Bloody Foreland in the very North West of Donegal. The smell of Turf here is intoxicating.
We had been to this particular area before but the light was never quite right. On this particular occasion, I thought we were out of luck again until there was a break in the clouds and the sun warmed up the whole landscape.
I paint from photographs as I could never sit in the open long enough to paint all this detail. www.johncooneyartist.com

My husband and I eloped to Ireland in September of 2016. Your beautiful island and lovely people had a profound impact on me. I will always hold Ireland near and dear to my heart. <3 https://d2b4i25io5fq3v.cloudfront.net/13-05-2019/a15148b3-0eb6-4f16-9072-893b.jpg
